Hi, guys —

I'm a 52-year-old woman who was raised Protestant but am not currently attending church at all, and haven't for years. I'm married and live in the more conservative, eastern part of Washington State. My question is:

  • What is the Catholic Church's teaching on tithing?

Brought up as a Protestant, we were pushed to give 10% of our income, but my husband and I are currently living off one part-time minimum wage job.

I have hesitated going to the Catholic Church, for fear that tithing would be expected and therefore we would not fit in.

Mary Ann replied:

Becky —

No one is expected to tithe in any Catholic community, although it is a good thing.

No one checks up on whether you tithe or not.

Give what you can, out of generosity and charity.

Mary Ann

Hi, Becky —

In addition to Mary Ann's fine reply, these postings also address your question.
