Hi, guys —

There seems to be conflicting information on the web about this question:

  • Does the Catholic Church recognise marriages between a Catholic and Anglican who were married in an Anglican church?

I married a (nominal) Catholic i.e. he has been baptized but is absolutely not a practicing Catholic nor any form of a Christian. The marriage ended because of his infidelity. He is now marrying that woman, who is also divorced, in the Catholic Church. They have told him that, because he was married in a Protestant church, his marriage was "not valid".

My entire family and I are extremely offended by this. I am absolutely sure that I was married in the eyes of God. As a practicing Christian who kept my marriage vows, this is a real slap in the face for me and my entire family.

  • Is this really what the Catholic Church believes?

Julia

  { How can the Catholic Church say that I wasn't really married when I know I was? }

Mike replied:

Dear Julia,

Thanks for the question.

These postings should answer your question. If not just reply back:

Fr. Jonathan's fourth and longest reply to the second posting covers your question pretty well.

For the Church, I apologize for the scandalous behavior on the part of one of our nominal Catholics; we strive to be practicing Christians, but some of our members really let us down : (

It's a consequence of free will.

Hope this helps,

Mike
