Hi, guys —

My daughter is on the waiting list for a liver transplant, and I would like to know.

Paula

  { Who is the patron saint of organ transplants? }

Mike replied:

Hi, Paula —

Thanks for the question.

I would pray to Saints Cosmas and Damian.

I did a little research and found this on several websites:

Stories of transplanted tissue and body parts go far back in myth and legend. Chinese folklore tells of organ transplants; in the sixth century A.D., the Western patron saints of medicine, Cosmas and Damian, supposedly replaced the cancerous leg of a white man with the healthy leg of a recently-deceased black man.

Sometimes you will see Cosmas, spelled Cosmos.

Unless my colleagues have another suggestion, these two physicians may be the best saints to pray to. Here are some prayers you can use:

Prayer to Saints Cosmas and Damian, Physicians and Martyrs for Doctors

O My Jesus, Saints Cosmas and Damian were twins who became excellent doctors. They refused payment for their medical care because they believed that when they treated patients, they were also caring for You. By conveying great love, they won the hearts of their patients as they taught them about the Faith.

I ask them to pray for my special skills, that I use them for Your glory. I also ask them to pray for all my medical colleagues in the medical field, that they grow in generosity of spirit. Bring conversion to the unsaved and teach Christians to serve You through their professional lives. Saints Cosmas and Damian, pray for us.

Amen

Prayer to Saints Cosmas and Damian, Physicians and Martyrs for other faithful

O Physicians of souls, Saints Cosmas and Damian, stand before the Lord of All and ask Him to heal me and all those dear to me of any spiritual ills we may endure.

Drive away from us all sin and sadness of mind, all darkness and despair. Make us then willing and loving servants of Christ, following your holy example of detachment from the things of this world and care for the needs of our neighbors.

On the glorious day of the Universal Resurrection may we shine with you in the full health of our nature restored by the mercies of Jesus who lives and reigns forever and ever.

Amen.

Hope this helps,

Mike
