Hi, guys —

Though my daughter was baptized in the Catholic Church, her biological father is a Jehovah Witness. My daughter's last name is the same as my married name which is my married husband . . . also a Catholic. My daughter's biological father wants her to use his last name.

  • Would the Catholic Church allow my daughter to have a non-Catholic last name?

Please help me,

Thanks,

S. J.

There is no such thing as a Catholic last name, other than historically. Your daughter bears the name given her at birth, which is usually the last name of the father.

If you want it to be otherwise, you have to legally change the name or your new husband must legally adopt her.
