Gene —
Let me make a comment from another
angle. I find it interesting that
we moderns don't see marriage as
a sacrifice. One reason we are so
close to the altar when we say the I
do's,
as G. K. Chesterton said, is because
marriage is just that
— a true sacrifice of one to
the other.
Sacrifices include hard work and
perseverance.
In our divorce culture, that mistakenly
sees marriage as the cause of continuous
happiness and pleasure and is disillusioned
when it is not, becoming engaged
during Lent would make no sense.
To those who understand the true
meaning of marriage, Lent can be
a rather appropriate time for an engagement.
Peace,
Paul
