Hannah wrote:

Hi guys,

  • Where in the Bible are the qualifications/requirements for priests?
  • Where in the Bible are we instructed to have priests?
  • In 1 Timothy 3:1-7 who are the overseers?

I assume overseers to be priests and the next section to be about deacons but I am unsure of this because of what Paul says about the overseers of the Church.

Please provide any Biblical evidence possible on this subject!

Thank you!

Hannah

  { Where are we instructed to have priests, where are the qualifications, and who are the overseers? }

Mike replied:

Dear Hannah,

This sounds like a homework assignment, so I am not bothered that it has been ten days since you originally asked this question. Hopefully, you have already handed in your homework.

As a Catholic Christian, it concerns me that you insist on Biblical evidence when the Word of God is far more than the Written Word. As St. John implies, there is the Oral Word (John 21:24-25) which the Church has passed down from generation to generation.

Our Oral Tradition, which no other Protestant congregation has, is just as much part of the Word as the Bible. Check out this portion of my Scripture Passages web page for more:

That said, let me share what the Scriptures do say on:

The institution of priests

Luke 22:14-20
Institution of priests at the Lord's Supper - in verse 19 Jesus says,
Do this in remembrance of me.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26
St. Paul carrying on Jesus' words and in verse 25 says,
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Some of the qualities of priests

Hebrews 5:1-4
2 He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness;  and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people.  And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God.

Qualifications of Bishops and Deacons

1 Timothy 3:1-13
Qualifications of Bishops verses 1-7
Qualifications of Deacons verses 8-13

My Scripture Passages web page will have additional verses as well.

This link will go to the relevant section referred to in your question.

In 1 Timothy 3:1-7, overseers are Bishops.

I hope this helps,

Mike
