Carol,
Let me start with your endpoint: You will know if the Catholic Church is right for you if, and when, you believe it is right. Period.
There is a plethora of information on our site in many different areas, and so many wonderful books are out there. I would consider reading something by Scott Hahn, a Protestant convert to Catholicism and now a wonderful advocate.
But here is the whole deal in a nutshell.
- God exists.
- He reached out to us through his Son, Jesus, in time and space.
- He started a Community (or family, called Church), and
- Wants to bring us home, for He has an Eternal Life to share with us.
The Catholic claim is that He started This Church with Twelve disciples, with one of them taking on a significant, unifying role: the Pope. The claims are backed by evidence of a historical and Scriptural nature.
Start at this point and investigate the claim to Apostolic authority and the Papacy and you are on your way.
God bless you on your journey, I'm sure you will find the answers you are looking for.
Peace,
Bob Kirby
