Hi, guys —

According to the Jehovah's Witnesses we do not have a soul.

  • Where is "the soul" mentioned in the Bible?

God bless you all and thank you.

Skeezix118

  { Since the JWs say we don't have a soul, can you tell me where "the soul" is alluded to in the Bible? }

John replied:

Dear Skeezix118 —

That's a pretty broad question.

There is no verse in a non-heretical translation that says that man has no soul. There are many verses that say we do. Here are just a few:

39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.

Hebrews 10:39 (AKJ)

2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.

3 John 1:2 (NKJ)

12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12 (NKJ)

Hope this helps.

Under His Mercy,

John C. DiMascio

Hi, Skeezix118 —

Thanks for the question.

I went through my Vatican approved software and found the following additional references to the word soul in the Bible.

11 Beloved, I beseech you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh that wage war against your soul.

1 Peter 2:11 (RSV)

23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 (RSV)

2 Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in health; I know that it is well with your soul.

3 John 1:2 (RSV)

Other (RSV) New Testament references can be found here:

Other (RSV) Old Testament references can be found here:

and numerous places in the Old Testament:

I hope this helps,

Mike
