Hi, Hector —
It is customary for the Pope, as
it is for all bishops of the Western
Church, to carry the crozier:
a staff with a cross or crucifix
at the end, as one of the insignia
of their office.
Pope St. John Paul's crozier does have
a distinctive artistic style about
it; it was designed by a sculptor
shortly after the Pope's accession
in 1978.
Unfortunately, I don't happen to
have the name of the artist available.
I hope this helps to clarify the
matter a little.
Yours in Christ,
— RC
