Hi Mike,

Can you put me in touch via e-mail with anyone who has been an:

  • Evangelical
  • Charismatic
  • Pentecostal, or
  • just a Protestant Christian

. . . who converted to Catholicism, preferably a woman.

I have been in such churches for 20 years after a Damascus road conversion where Jesus impacted my life powerfully.

To cut a long story short, I became disillusioned with churches that fell out and split, causing lots of hurt casualties, and became increasingly aware of a need within me for proper communion i.e. I became convicted that the Eucharist is or should be more than bread and wine. I have some Catholic friends who, some months ago, started facilitating an RCIA course in their home.

This was fantastic, but I would like to be in contact with someone who understands my feelings, which go from wanting to embrace the whole Catholic faith to pushing it away

As you might expect, I have a lot of baggage from my Protestant background about Mary, whom I have a [fascination—fear] relationship with.  I also have issues with the Church on topics like idol worship, and the Catholic Church being the Whore of Babylon.  It all feels very scary at times.  It's been a bit of a roller coaster ride, and 10-15 years ago, neither I or my evangelical friends would have expected me to be on this exploratory journey.

I hope you can help,

Mike replied:

Dear LookingForOthersWhoHaveJoined,

Thanks for the e-mail.

I have a special web page specifically for this purpose.

Our Web Page for Wannabes.

On that page you will find current Wannabes (those in the process of becoming Catholic), and former Wannabes. (those who have entered the Church)

For the issues you mentioned:

  • idol worship
  • the Catholic Church being the Whore of Babylon, and
  • beliefs about Mary

I recommend you search our knowledge base as we have answered many of the misperceptions you have on these topics; and they are misperceptions.

Here are some good sources from very solid Catholic Apologists who have joined the Church over the years. You should bookmark their web sites in your Internet Explorer favorites:

Catholic Answers: Catholic Answers
Scott Hahn: St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology
Patrick Madrid: Patrick Madrid and Envoy Magazine
James Akin: The Nazareth Resource Library
Tim Staples: Tim Staples, Director of Apologetics and Speaker
Steve Ray: Defenders of the Catholic Faith

I used to run a free program that sent Catechisms to seeking Protestants and non-Christians but no longer have the financial or operational means to do this anymore. Nevertheless, if you wish to go deeper, consider buying a cheap copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church to learn everything we believe as Catholics.

Based on what you have said, it should clear up many misperceptions you appear to have about the Church.

Hope this helps,

Mike
