Hi guys,

I'm thinking about joining the Catholic Church and I would like to know if I will have to confess my past sins, or just the sins I may commit as a new, practicing Catholic.

Eric replied:

Hi Jesse,

If you are baptized, you will have to confess all past mortal sins which you can recall (those grave sins you committed knowingly, freely, and deliberately).

If you are not baptized, baptism washes away your sins and you are all set.

My answer assumes you are validly baptized in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, which would not be the case if you were baptized a:

  • Mormon
  • Jehovah's Witness, or
  • Oneness Pentecostal, among other cases.

Eric
