Michael Crouthamel wrote:

Hi, guys —

My mother was married in the Church. She divorced my father and remarried outside of the Church. She has left the Church and I want to talk to her about returning.

I know she can't receive Communion but:

  • In what other ways would the Church invite her back and how could she benefit?
  • Does the Church accept her anymore?

Thank you.

Michael

Richard replied:

Hi, Michael —

Your mother's always welcome to come to church and to attend Mass, even though she apparently can't receive the sacrament of Holy Communion at the present time.

You'd be surprised at how many Catholics are in the same position. Your mom is still a member of the Catholic community and is welcome to participate as much as possible. If there's any question about what activities she should participate in, she should talk to her pastor.

He can give her some guidance about any possible limitations.

If she ever has a desire to fully regularize her situation with the Church, she can ask her pastor about the possibility of seeking an annulment of her original marriage and any other necessary steps.

God bless your efforts to spread the peace of Christ to souls!
