Carla wrote:

Hi, guys —

I am Catholic. My husband divorced me, (not my choice), and he did not want our children to be raised Catholic. They are with me and I want to raise them Catholic.

Can they start now; they are 8 and 10 years old, respectively?

Carla

  { If my divorced husband does not want our children to be raised Catholic, but I do, can I start now? }

Mary Ann replied:

Hi, Carla —

Yes!

Children may become Catholic if the custodial parent gives permission, which should not be a problem, as you are the custodial parent and you are Catholic. If you were married in the Church, then:

  • he would have had to promise not to interfere with their being raised Catholic, and
  • you would have promised to raise them Catholic.

I hope you are able to live out your promise and your desire.

Mary Ann
