Thomas Hyde wrote:

Hi, guys —

I am newly converted and plan to join the Church within the next few months. I'm looking for a conservative Catholic parish in the Fort Myers, Florida area.

  • Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Thomas

  { As a new convert, do you know of any conservative Catholic parish in the Fort Myers, Florida area? }

Mike replied:

Hi, Thomas —

Great to hear from you.

For the rest of the team: Thomas is a former Assembly of God minister who has a strong desire to join the Church. He was originally in Kansas but has moved to Florida. He has also been a participant of my free Catechism program which I had to suspend due to a lack of personal finances.

I was thinking about your situation after we talked last time and seeing that you have
a history of devoted service as an Assemblies of God minister, many of the skills and talents you had there could also be used within the diocese of Venice: (the Ft. Myers area).

I would try to make a personal appointment with the bishop of Venice. Wait if you have to.
Tell him your strong interest in joining the Church but in serving at a parish that is faithful to the Holy Father.  Also share with him your previous ministry service at the Assembly of God:

  • what you did in what areas, and
  • what responsibilities you had
  • etc.

If you have ever thought about the priesthood or being a deacon, share that with him too.
Also share with him your concerns about the parish we talked about that had an apparent [socialistic|communistic} views of social justice.  This may be a situation he is not aware of.

Whether he knows or doesn't know, just share with him  your desire to participate in a Catholic parish that is faithful to the Magisterium and the True teachings of the Church.

Usually these parishes have:

  • a devotion to Mary
  • a faithfulness to the Holy Father, and
  • regular Eucharistic Adoration, if not, a Perpetual Adoration Chapel

One person that's doing great work in the Church is David Cheney.

His web site: Catholic Hierarchy has a list of all the Catholic dioceses in the world!

Don't necessarily look for one diocese.  If you can find another parish in a nearby diocese that is more faithful to the Church, make an appoint with that bishop.

From Catholic Hierarchy you can use:

Here are the seven dioceses in Florida, the bishops and  their web sites:

Archdiocese/Diocese Bishop Website
Archdiocese of Miami Archbishop John Favalora https://www.miamiarch.org
Diocese of Orlando Bishop Thomas Wenski https://www.orlandodiocese.org
Diocese of Palm Beach Bishop Gerald Barbarito https://www.diocesepb.org
Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee Bishop John Ricard https://www.ptdiocese.org
Diocese of Saint Augustine Bishop Victor Galeone https://www.dosafl.com
Diocese of Saint Petersburg Bishop Robert Lynch https://www.dosp.org
Diocese of Venice
(the Ft. Myer's area)
Bishop Frank Dewane https://dioceseofvenice.org

Kudos to my colleague Eric who assisted me with this answer.

Hope this helps,

Mike
