Hi, guys —

I'm a 56-year-old retired and disabled Navy Chief. We made the decision to move before we sold our house which wasn't the best decision. The housing market, being in the dump as it is, leaves us no other alternative but to rent the house out. Otherwise, we will have to borrow money just to sell the house.

  • That all being said, and considering the many discrimination laws concerning landlords and tenants, what does the Church say about renting to an unmarried and/or homosexual couple?

They are not on the "protected" list but some of the unwritten laws are the most difficult ones.
I'm concerned that we would be lending to someone else's sin and thereby sinning ourselves.
I have no wish to discriminate against anyone but the homosexual lifestyle disgusts me, to be honest, but that's here nor there. I won't discriminate because it's normally wrong.

  • Also, isn't it wrong for people to receive Communion who have not had proper training and have not received their First Confession before their First Communion?

Thanks and God Bless you.

Mary Ann replied:

Dear Bilge Rat —

Knowingly renting your home to a homosexual or unmarried couple is material cooperation in sin, but not necessarily sinful in itself, depending on a lot of factors.

If you cannot find another renter, and you are legally obligated, you would have to rent to them.
I would offer it around to other contacts, friends and relatives.

Of course, a single person could rent your house and then do sinful things in the house that you have no control over. You could also have the house rented out by a rental agency, and that way you are more removed from the material cooperation.

As to your last question, generally, yes, it is not correct. The person may be acting in ignorance.

Consult your pastor about this.

God bless.

Mary Ann

Mike replied:

Hi, Bilge Rat —

As my colleague Eric said in another posting:

There is really no justification for the practice of having First Communion before First Penance.

Canon Law expects, if not insists, on having First Penance first, before
First Communion.

The reverse order is generally regarded as an abuse.

Mike
