Hi, guys —

  • Does the Pope have a Spiritual Director?

I know the answer to this question is going to be referring to a new pope very soon, but with all of the stresses of the job, I wonder if he has one.

Mike replied:

Hi, Travis —

Thanks for the question.

I don't know for sure but I would think every Pope in recent history would have a Spiritual Director.

Maybe my colleague, Fr. Jonathan who was trained in Rome, has an idea.

Mike

Travis replied:

Mike,

Thanks for the response.

I understand my question may be a strange one, and it doesn't concern Catholic theology at all, so
I appreciate you taking the time to respond anyway. If you happen to talk to Fr. Jonathan and the topic comes up, I'd be interested in hearing back.

I know that many other people in positions of power have Spiritual Directors, and with:

  • the rich tradition of spiritual direction within Catholicism — the Ignatian spiritual exercises of the Jesuits comes to mind — and
  • the enormous weight that such an office necessarily carries with it

I'm curious about this.

Blessings,

Travis

Fr. Jonathan replied:

Hi, Travis —

He certainly has a Confessor but the Vatican would not publish his name.
I have not heard whether he has a Spiritual Director or not — though he could.

Fr. Jonathan
