Isaiah wrote:

Hi, guys —

  • Do all Roman Catholic priests speak fluent Italian [and/or] Latin?

After all, there are Cardinals from every corner of the map and they must have a united language that they can use in conclaves.

Without communication, they would never elect a new Bishop of Rome!

Isaiah

  { Do all Catholic Cardinals speak fluent Italian or Latin so they can elect a pope at each conclave? }

Bob replied:

Isaiah,

Sadly, there is no language that all Cardinals have with equal facility.

While Latin is said to the be universal language of the Church, not all are as proficient in Latin as others.

Conclaves tend to be multilingual and there are translators present to help those who would be at a loss without their assistance.

Peace,

Bob Kirby
