Hi, guys —

  • Is it a mortal sin to take shots that may contain aborted fetus cells?

I will be taking a nursing program and it requires me to take shots and one or more of them may contain these cells. It's not like the doctor office telling you what brand they are using and I may not have a choice but to take the shot in order to be a nurse.

  • In my case, if I can't really avoid it, would it be a sin?

Bob replied:

ConcernedFutureNurse,

It would not be a sin unless you were certain the shot did, and then your culpability is still mitigated by the fact that you did not consent to the aborting of the fetus or the use of the cells in the vaccine. So, ultimately, no, it is not a mortal sin. Your consent is not full to the matter which is sinful.

Nevertheless, it may be worth looking for companies that do not use aborted fetus cells and who promote themselves as such. If you work in the medical industry, you could be another voice to promote such an enterprise.

I have heard that there are such companies, but have no knowledge directly from which to make recommendations. That kind of research would be valuable to pass on.

Peace,

Bob Kirby
