Thomas Bell wrote:

Hi, guys —

I understand and accept that the Catholic Church is infallible when teaching that something is morally good since otherwise She might lead us into sin.

  • This makes perfect sense to me but why should infallibility also be granted to Her when teaching that something is morally bad?

Whether right or wrong she would still not be leading us into sin. The guarantee of infallibility in this situation seems unnecessary.

  • Am I missing something?

Thomas

Eric replied:

Thomas,

Because if something is morally bad, it leads us to Hell. If She didn't tell us what was morally bad, and if people didn't believe Her when she told us something was morally bad, then people would be led to Hell.

She's infallible so that people will take her seriously when She says that something will lead us to Hell.

Eric
