Repentant Rita wrote:

Hi, guys —

I had an affair five years ago for five months. I know I made a huge mistake and I want to ask for forgiveness from a priest.

  • Will I be forgiven or will I have to admit what I have done to my husband right away?

I'm afraid it will tear our marriage apart. I truly love him. I have also been receiving Communion, and I know this is so wrong.

Rita

  { If I confess my affair will I be forgiven or will I have to share what I've done with my husband? }

Bob replied:

Rita,

Go to Confession right away, and stop receiving Holy Communion until you have done so.

It may be unfair to your husband to tell him — it could hurt your marriage more by causing him great pain. I don't think your Confessor would tell you to do this; the marriage deserves better now.

It is probably something you will have to bear alone.

Peace,

Bob Kirby
