Hi, guys —

I notice there are two patron saints for firefighters: Saint Florian and Saint Eustace.

  • What's the difference between them and which is more appropriate in this day and age?

Mike replied:

Dear Neil,

The various saints in the Church have an array of backgrounds and historical deeds by which the Church concluded that this person is a model example of holiness to follow, especially in a specific area.

For this reason, I would encourage any questioner or reader of this posting to do some research on these, or any other, patron saints and conclude which one is more aligned with the:

  • background, and
  • interests of a specific firehouse, group of firefighters, or whatever.

Let me help with the following resources:

Encyclopedia definition: Patron Saints

Saint Eustace

Saint Florian

I hope this helps,
