Hi Mike,

In reading an answer regarding Catholics and Passover written by Eric Ewanco, I came across this error and wanted to bring it to your attention:

13 I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord.
(Psalm 116:13)

This passages is actually from Psalm 115:13

My reference is from the Douay-Rheims Bible which is very much Catholic. I'm definitely no Bible scholar, so this is confusing to me.

  • I could understand how a Protestant version would differ, but a Catholic version?

God Bless,

Lawrence

  { Why is a reference to a Psalm off by one in an answer Eric provided on Catholics and Passover? }

John replied:

Hi, Lawrence —

There is a difference in how the Psalms are numbered because different manuscripts have slightly different numbering systems. That's the short answer.

I'm sure a 10 second google search will give you the details. These web pages should help, in addition to the table, which maps all the Psalms to the two numbering systems.

You have to read the following web pages/web postings to understand why there isn't a one to one relationship between the two numbering systems.

Hebrew (Masoretic) Numbering System Greek (Septuagint or Vulgate) Numbering System
1-8 1-8
9-10 9
11-113 10-112
114-115 113
116 114-115
117-146 116-145
147 146-147
148-150 148-150

I hope this helps,

John
