Hi, guys —

I'm trying to start a Catholic clothing brand, and I wanted to know if there are any guidelines for using Catholic symbols and art.

For example, I had someone suggest merchandise depicting Our Lady of Sorrows. While I'd love to make something depicting Our Lady of Sorrows, just putting Her image on a plain tee shirt or hoodie, in a way, seems irreverent.

I also had someone suggest merchandise depicting angels in a biblically accurate way with the rings of eyes and many wings.

  • Is this allowed?

I'd just like to know if there's any set of rules or guidelines for using the images of saints and other holy figures outside of a church setting.

Thank you!

Gabrielle

Dear Gabrielle,

Thanks for the question.

The only limit I know of concerns the use of the word "Catholic", which could run into problems with the local diocese with respect to your use of an official title.  In some cases, a Bishop would have to approve the use of the descriptor in order for you to use it legally.

That may not apply in your case, but should you choose to name your business something like Catholic Fashion or whatever, you may need that approval.  I would consult with your Bishop if you go that route.

Peace,

Bob Kirby
