Want To Get Married Yvette wrote:

Hi, guys —

I am a Roman Catholic and have received my Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation all in the Roman Catholic Church. My fiancé is Greek Orthodox. We have already decided that our future children will be practicing Roman Catholics.

  • Is it possible to have a wedding in the Catholic Church?

I've heard of this happening before but was not sure it was possible.

I appreciate any information you can provide!

Many Thanks,

Yvette

  { Can my Greek Orthodox fiancé and I get wed in Church if he hasn't received Catholic sacraments? }

  Eric replied:

Yvette,

This is a canonical question, and we aren't competent to answer such questions authoritatively.

From the Catholic side, I don't expect this is a problem, heck, you can marry a non-Christian in Catholicism, but your fiancé may have some issues with his church if he wishes to remain in good standing with the Greek Orthodox church.

  • Have you spoken to your pastor about this?

He's your go-to man for the nitty-gritty details.

Eric

Yvette replied:

Eric,

Thanks so much for the quick response!

I thought non-Catholics had to convert and receive Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation in a Catholic Church in order to get married there. My fiancé is not worried about remaining in good standing with the Greek Orthodox church.

I'll make sure to ask the pastor about this.

Thanks so much!

Yvette

Eric replied:

Yvette,

No, I can definitely say it is not true that a non-Catholic has to convert to Catholicism to marry a Catholic.

Eric

Yvette replied:

Eric,

Thanks for clearing up this issue for us.

Yvette
