Tax Questioner, De Luca wrote:

Hi, guys —

It is tax season and it is at this time that I start thinking about who to donate to next year — in 2025. I like organizations such as:

  • (FINCA) Foundation for International Community Assistance
  • (DWB) Doctors Without Borders or (in French): (MSF) Médecins Sans Frontières, and
  • Mercy Ships . . .

but if they perform abortions, can I still support them?

  • If not, who would you recommend that provide similar services?

De Luca

  { For tax purposes, can I donate to these organizations, who I like, but who perform abortions? }

Bob replied:

Dear De Luca,

I am not familiar with all of these charities, but I personally stopped giving to (DWB), Doctors Without Borders, when I discovered they do sponsor birth control and in some cases abortion.

I would check with the Lepanto Institute for an analysis on organizations that may conflict with Catholic teaching.

Peace,

Bob Kirby

Mike replied:

Dear DeLuca,

No faithful Christian could support the organizations you mentioned, if they performed services (like abortion or birth control), because these services are contrary to the moral values Jesus established when He found His Church on St. Peter and his successors. A Christian should always model their lives based on Pro-life words and actions.

If a Catholic deliberately finances any organization who performs abortions, they are an accomplice to the pre-natal murders performed by that “organization”.

That said, I never thought I would be blessed enough to eventually see the overturning of Roe v. Wade.  Nevertheless, with the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling from the Supreme Court, comes the responsibility of doing the best we can, to support young and older women who have had unexpectant pregnancies with the financial assistant they need to start their family and, if possible, bring all parties involved, back together.

They have such an organization at my local parish, and I regularly give healthy donations that support women in these situations. I’m still a single man but this allows me to at least spiritually-adopt and financially support these pro-life women.

The principle of subsidiarity is a Catholic social teaching that encourages the distribution of power and social functions to the lowest possible level. It's based on the idea that communities should support each other, rather than have higher-level communities take over their functions.

How does subsidiarity work?

  • It promotes personal responsibility and freedom
  • It helps balance individual interests with the needs of society
  • It encourages communities to work together to solve problems
  • It supports the idea that local groups have unique insights into what's best for their communities

Examples of subsidiarity in practice:

  • Local school districts make many decisions about subject content, even though the state funds education and sets some basic requirements

Purpose of subsidiarity

The principle of subsidiarity is intended to help achieve the common good of the local community. It's a key part of Catholic social thought and a bulwark of limited government and personal freedom.

So, if you don’t have such an organization at your parish, START ONE!!

Mike
