Our question has to do with the consumption of the consecrated Host by a priest.

At our church, one of our priests does not consume the Holy Eucharist at the altar but will wait until the congregation has received Holy Communion. He will then receive the Eucharist from one of the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

Hi, John and Paula —

The practice is clearly illicit.

The rubrics in the Missal clearly indicate the order in which Communion is to be received and make it quite clear that the celebrant is to receive **first**. This is simply a misguided attempt to express solidarity with the laity by receiving in the manner they do.

Incidentally, this is dealt with in my book Mass Confusion.
