Hi, guys—

In a few weeks I have to give a short talk on genetic manipulation to a high school (PSR) Parish School of Religion. I am talking about things like the genetic treatments for Cystic Fibrosis.

I know that the Church doesn't condemn it out of hand. I was fortunate enough to get to speak briefly to Dr. Lejune before he died about the issue and he didn't condemn it.

Nevertheless, I am at a loss as to how to find out what guidelines are out there.

Any information you can offer would be appreciated.

Melanie

Mike replied:

Hi, Melanie —

The best I can do is recommend you search the National Catholic Bioethics Center website here:

I also found this reference on the EWTN website which should help:

  • Dangers of Genetic Manipulation by Pope John Paul II — October 29, 1983.
