Hi, guys —

Recently a three month old baby (of Catholic parents) passed away due to severe heart disease.

I was told that this baby turned into an angel, upon its death.  I was rather amazed, since the Bible clearly states that we are just below angels and that they are created beings. (Hebrews 2:7, Psalm 8:5)

As a non-Catholic, this is very unusual for me to believe.

  • Asking with respect and curiosity, at death, does a child turn into an angel?

Looking forward to your reply,

Inge

John replied:

Hi, Inge —

Thanks for the question.

Whoever said that was either using a figure of speech or was ignorant of Catholic teaching.

Most likely the person was trying to say, that the baby was with Jesus.

While, on one level, we are created just below the angels, the Bible also tells us that the angels are our ministering servants and that we will, someday, judge some of them. Further, we share in the inheritance of Christ in a way that the angels never will.

So while the angels operate in certain supernatural ways that transcend the physical world, man is God's crowning jewel.

Hope this helps,

John DiMascio

Dear Inge,

You said:

Answer: No.

This is simply a popular myth, perhaps based on a distortion of Matthew 22:30:

22 30 At the Resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in Heaven.

Matthew 22:30

Nevertheless, we will not *be* angels, just *like* them, in that we will not sexually reproduce.
