Mike replied:
Hi Catherine,
I don't have a confident answer, but do know the word Mass comes from the Latin Missa, meaning to
be sent.
As lay disciplines of Our Lord, Catholics every Sunday, ideally:
- learn from the Scriptures
- get helpful instruction from the pulpit, and
- finally get fed with the Eucharist.
Having been equipped in body and mind for the week to come, we are sent into the
world to apply, by words and actions, Catholic Christian values through what we have heard and
been nourished with at Sunday Mass.

Eric replied:
Hi Catherine,
It comes from the last line of the Mass, which is Ite, missa est,
or Go, the Mass is ended.
It can also be read literally, according
to my limited knowledge of Latin, Go, it has been sent,
but
it's unclear what that might mean. (Online Etymology)
The phrase seems
to be idiomatic.
