Hi Kathy,
The Charismatic Renewal is a movement that emphasizes:
- the charismatic gifts of the
Spirit (such as miraculous healing and speaking in tongues)
- open and lively praise
and worship, and
- a personal experience with God.
Charismatic's tend to meet in regular
prayer meetings distinct from the Mass, although there are charismatic Masses as
well. It is a movement approved by the Church and frequently praised by the popes like Pope St. John Paul II; I'm not sure what Benedict has had to say about the group.
It focuses
on an experience called baptism in the Holy Spirit which is a kind of
awakening of the graces of the sacraments of Confirmation and Baptism.
You can google for an array of Catholic Charismatic Renewal ministries within each diocese.
