Hi Kathy,

The Charismatic Renewal is a movement that emphasizes:

  • the charismatic gifts of the Spirit (such as miraculous healing and speaking in tongues)
  • open and lively praise and worship, and
  • a personal experience with God.

Charismatic's tend to meet in regular prayer meetings distinct from the Mass, although there are charismatic Masses as well. It is a movement approved by the Church and frequently praised by the popes like Pope St. John Paul II; I'm not sure what Benedict has had to say about the group.
It focuses on an experience called baptism in the Holy Spirit which is a kind of awakening of the graces of the sacraments of Confirmation and Baptism.

You can google for an array of Catholic Charismatic Renewal ministries within each diocese.

Hi, guys —

Thank you very much for your prompt response.

My husband and I come from a charismatic Protestant church background and he has especially has missed charismatic services. It's been a part of our faith journeys and it is good to know that the Catholic church is OK with it.

I will be participating in the Rites of Election in two weeks. I am not sure about my husband yet, but I will be passing on the information you and others have providing.

Thank you again,

Kathy
