Sam G. wrote:

Hi, guys —

My friend brought me holy water from the Jordan River last week when she came from Israel.

  • Are there any specific uses for it?
  • Are there any specific prayers that go with it?
  • Are they more purifying than regular holy water (from my Church)?
  • Do all Christians find these waters special or there is a special religion that does?

Thank You,

Sam

  { Is holy water from the Jordan and other holy places, holier than the holy water at my parish? }

Mike replied:

Hi, Sam —

Thanks for the question.

The holy water at any Catholic Church is no holier then holy water from the Holy Land.

I would think holy water from the Holy Land could probably be used for special occasions, or to make special things or persons holy, but it is not necessary nor required.

There are no specific uses for Holy water from any holy place in the world, other than what you wish to make holy with it.

I'm not familiar with any official prayers that would go with them, though there may be some unofficial prayer attached.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Mary Ann replied:

Sam —

There is the additional case of Lourdes water, which is not holy unless blessed, but which is graced with healing properties, thanks to the prayers of the Mother of God, who appeared there.

John replied:

Sam —

I think we need to draw a distinction between:

  • Holy Water which is simply water that has been blessed, and
  • Water, such as Mary Ann mentioned, that:
    • has been known to be miraculous or
    • water that has been associated with healings.
