Hi, guys —

We have been instructing a man that came through the  RCIA  process at another Catholic Church, and he is now in our parish. He has since written to our Bishop stating he no longer wants to be in the Catholic Church. The Bishop has replied, and the letter is noted on his Baptismal Certificate at the Church of record.

He wants to join our Landings process and has taken our Apologetics courses; however, he has a deep disdain for the Holy Father because he is German. He says he will never come back to the Church until we have a new Pope. His opinions are very strong but he continues to show up in our Bible studies and, as you can imagine, is very vocal. Marian Dogma is another very touchy subject with him. I am in charge of the Landings Program and do not want to see a soul pass us.

  • What is your recommendation?

Thank you and may God continue to bless His Church.

Richard

Hi, Richard —

You have to discern and strive to read in-between the lines.

You said:

I don't understand how someone can take a set of Apologetics courses yet dissent on teachings of the faith. Catholic Apologetics is about defending a faith you know and believe in, unless he never correctly understood the faith. Something doesn't smell right here.

  • What do I mean?
  • Some people are just ignorant of the Church.
  • Other people are not really interested in finding out what the Church believes and humbly submitting to all Her Teachings.

If he said he will never come back to the Church until we have a new Pope, he obviously doesn't trust the Holy Spirit or doesn't understand Catholic Teaching in this area. We can't put emotions before our pursuit of the truth.

I know you want to help all souls in your parish, and that is admirable, but you also have to care and watch over the current souls in your Landing program. Sometimes the best we can do is pray for a person.

The question for me is whether he should be invited to your Bible Studies and Apologetic classes, especially if you sense an attitude of dissent and tearing down the Church.

I would be interested in your pastor's view of this person and the view of the pastor of the Church of record.

You have to discern:

  • Does he want to learn and clear-up Catholic misperceptions he has about the faith at Landings?, or
  • Preach condemnation on the Church?

If the latter, pray for him but don't invite him.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Richard replied:

Mike,

Thanks again for your insight. I concur, and he is on our watch list. My Pastor is standing by whenever he wants to talk. Currently, I (and another gentlemen) teach our Apologetics course here at the Parish. He attended that course and was civil but not moved.

Obviously, there is some psychological deficit there also. He admitted that during a Bible session. This is not my opinion. When I spoke to him recently, we both concluded a Landings initiative was not going to help.

You have been very helpful, and I pray your other questions are easier than mine.

God bless you abundantly,

Richard
