Hi, Anne —
What matters is the matter and the
form. According to:
The matter is the oil and
the laying on of hands by the
celebrant and the form is the
prayers of the priest or bishop.
The priest or bishop will pray
in silence and then anoint the
sick person with oil.
It's possible that if the oil is
administered with the hand, this
would count as laying on of hands,
but I'm not really competent to judge. As this
is a question affecting sacramental
validity, I'm hesitant to make a
definitive judgment.
You might call your diocese for a
more authoritative answer.
