Linda Higgins wrote:

Hi, guys —

This doesn't have to do with Catholicism per se, but, being from New Orleans, I correlate
Mardi Gras and Easter.

  • Aren't there 40 days of Lent?

Mardi Gras was on February 15th this year.

  • How can Easter be April 14th?

That puts the two days 59 days apart. This puzzle is driving me crazy.

  • Can anyone explain this to me?

Thanks for your help.

  { Seeing there are forty days in Lent, why don't the days between Mardi Gras and Easter equal forty? }

John replied:

Hi, Linda —

Well first of all, you start counting on Ash Wednesday not Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras).

Secondly, you don't ever count Sundays.

I haven't done the math, nor do I intend to, but if you want to try again, in the light of the above information, you can let us know how many days you come up with.

John

Francis Jesch, a friend of Mike's replied:

Hi, Mike!

John is correct.

A couple of corrections from Linda Higgins' query.

  • Mardi Gras this year was February 16th (not 15th);
  • Easter Sunday will be April 4th (not 14th).

If you count the days beginning from Ash Wednesday (February 17th) and end on Holy Saturday (April 3rd), there are forty days, if you exclude the Sundays.

Thank you for your help.

My son, who lives in New Orleans, told me that Easter is on the 14th. That just goes to show you what he knows.

I didn't think to check on the internet. I just took his word for it. No wonder I couldn't figure it out.

Linda
