Hi, guys —

Although I am a practicing Catholic and believe in Catholic teachings, I have a question:

  • Is it true that if a person, who is a lapsed Catholic for three years, dies, his body will be excluded from entering the Church?

Hi, Christopher —

There are two issues you may have on your mind:

  1. being buried in the Church with a Catholic burial, and
  2. entering Heaven

Yes, unless he or she was more than a lapsed Catholic, like one who totally repudiated and renounced the faith, then they would be able to have a Catholic burial.

That said, I don't wish to pass judgment on any cardinal or bishop that has permitted a Catholic burial for any well-known pubic figure who had renounced their faith. The job of any cardinal or bishop is a very tough one and requires our prayers.

Most of the time, no one can say whether a lapsed Catholic entered Heaven or not.

There are criteria for those who pass on to their Particular Judgment:

  • they will be responsible for what they knew.
  • they will not be responsible for what they did not know BUT
  • they will be responsible if they purposely ignored:
    • the obligation of forming a Christian conscience, or
    • if they were non-Christians, the promptings of the Holy Spirit from within

Hope this answers your question.

Mike
