Those in Heaven and in Purgatory
need not ask for forgiveness because
they have already been forgiven.
Purgatory is a place for:
purging
the effects of sin, and
purification,
not for forgiveness of guilt.
Those in Hell do not want forgiveness,
for they have rejected God and continue
in eternity in their hatred of Him.
Paul

Michael —
When our Earthly pilgrimage comes to an end, meaning when we die, so does are ability to make good choices in Christ; this includes the ability to (choose or ask) to be forgiven.
This is why preparation is so important to the Christian life and Christian living.
1013 Death is the end of man's earthly pilgrimage, of the time of grace and mercy which God offers him so as to work out his earthly life in keeping with the divine plan, and to decide his ultimate destiny. When the single course of our earthly life is completed, (Vatican II, Lumen Gentium (238) § 3.) we shall not return to other earthly lives: It is appointed for men to die once. (Hebrews 9:27)
There is no reincarnation after death.
When our Earthly journey comes to an end (when we pass from this Earthly life) we immediately have our Particular Judgment; a one on one with Jesus on our life and, hopefully, its achievements; if few, we know His Mercy will also be there.
Remember, the Lord wants to save us. It is the sole reason He died on the Cross for us! . . . so be prepared and in the process have a good moral assurance of your salvation.
For the lapsed Catholic, this starts with going to Confession.
Hope this helps,
Mike
