Hi, guys —

  • How do I reply to a non-believer or Protestant that says the Catholic Church has apostatized?

Thanks!

Mary Ann replied:

Andrew —

  • Ask him what his authority is for judging the Church?
  • Is he making himself a Pope?
  • How does he know what he is saying is true?
  • How does he know what the true faith of the Apostles is?

On our site you can find many articles which will show you how Catholic doctrine is Scriptural,
but there is another question:

  • Who decided what Scriptures were the Scriptures?

Mary Ann

Eric replied:

Hi, Andrew —

This is not an easy question to answer.

The best answer involves a thorough analysis of what the Early Church believed, comparing it to Catholicism and Protestantism.

You will find that the early Christian Church — the first four centuries, before the canon of the New Testament was determined and canonized — believed essentially what the Catholic Church today believes, and contradicts what all the Protestants teach.

The homework is a bit daunting but if you have enough motivation and don't mind some study,
it can be done.

Here is my recommendations:

Eric
