Mike replied:

Hi, Teresa —

Thanks for the question.

No. Neither satan, or any of his demonic associates, can torment a soul in Purgatory.

The Catechism tells us:

Paragraph 7. The Fall — In Brief.

414 Satan or the devil and the other demons are fallen angels who have freely refused to serve God and his plan. Their choice against God is definitive. They try to associate man in their revolt against God.

  • Their choice is fixed for eternity in Hell.
  • Our free will, will be fixed for eternity at our Particular Judgment when we pass from this life.

Purgatory should be seen as the Holy Hospital of Heaven. Those in Purgatory have been saved by the Blood of the Lamb, Jesus, Our Lord and Savior, and are destined for Heaven.
The only difference between Heaven and Purgatory is:

  • in Heaven our soul is purified
  • in Purgatory our soul is being purified, as Scripture refers to, by a holy fire.
    cf. 1 Corinthians 3:15; 1 Peter 1:7.

Those in Purgatory are saved, but not purified. The finished work of Christ is complete and is being applied to those in Purgatory. It has to be applied because man has free will to choose good deeds or choose bad deeds during his Earthly life.

Here's the good news!
We can help speed up the purification process for them and they greatly want us to help. Souls in Purgatory can pray for us but they can't pray to purify their own suffering; it must be done over time or can be done through our prayers for them.

If you are a Catholic with a strong devotion to praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, check out my other apostolate, Helpers of the Holy Souls.

We are trying to find groups of Catholics who be interested in starting Purgatory Prayer Programs across the United States. We have a starter-kit to help and the best part is it's FREE!

Hope this helps,
