Hi, guys —

About nine years ago, I believe that I had an experience which Catholics call a spiritual or religious ecstasy; it lasted about five minutes. Ever since, whenever I think about it, I get very afraid and confused to the point that I had to be prescribed medication. I have told only one person about this experience.

  • Is there any view from the Catholic Church or advice you could give me on how I should respond to this miraculous experience?

If it really did happen, which I believe, I don't think that God would want me to go the rest of my life being so frightened by it.

By the way I'd like to thank the people of this website for answering all my questions in the past, it has really helped me to understand Catholicism.

Mary Ann replied:

Jonathan,

You should take such experiences to a good priest who will direct you spiritually. Confusion is not a sign of an experience from God, nor is it the kind of fear you speak of (requiring medication).

Your question should not be:

  • Did I, or did I not, have a spiritual experience?

Your question should be:

  • Was this experience from God, from satan or from my psyche, and what does God want me to do about it?

The priest can help you with that.
