A person who has been divorced, whose previous spouse(s) have not died, requires a declaration that those previous marriages were never valid from the beginning, before they can marry anyone.

This applies to both Catholics and non-Catholics; both parties must be unencumbered by valid past marriages not yet dissolved by death. The popular, if misleading, term for this declaration is
an annulment.
