I was wondering if I needed to get a dispensation from a vow, where would I go?

  • to a regular Priest
  • to a regular Pastor
  • to a Bishop, or
  • to the Pope?
  • And, can it be done within the Sacrament of Confession?

Mike replied:

Hi Anonymous,

It depends on what type of vow you took.

If it was a third order religious or more serious religious order vow, (there are different types of vows), you should start with the Abbot or Abbess of the order you are associated with. They can address this issues appropriately.

If they can't, they would be able to direct you to the appropriate [person|people] up the hierarchy of the Church.

Hope this helps,
