As a refresher and reminder of Catholic teaching, the Church teaches that those who die in a state of grace and who are saved by the Blood of Christ, yet still have some remaining impurities attached to their souls, undergo a process of purification toward 100% holiness and therefore union with God. (Revelation 21:27) St. Paul refers to this in 1 Corinthians 3:15 and the Old Testament assumes it in 2 Maccabees 12:38-46.

One can and should think of Purgatory, not as a third place beside Heaven and Hell, but as the Holy Hospital of Heaven.
