  { How should a teenage discern their vocation and do you have any tips for praying a novena? }

Mike replied:

Dear Alexis,

Thanks for the question.

Whether discerning:

  • between a vocation in the secular world versus religious life, or
  • between various vocations in the secular world

living a sacrament life is key. It consists of:

  • Going to Confession at least monthly
  • renewing your covenant every Sunday (and on Holy Days) with the Lord by going to Mass — go to daily Mass if possible!
  • if you don't know the teachings of the Church, learning them via the Catechism, and
  • carving out 15-20 minutes a day for a prayer life! (I strongly recommend the Rosary.)

Going to Mass, Confession, or learning what you believe as a Catholic isn't only for religious vocations. All Catholics are called to fulfill the call of Our Blessed Lord Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20.

If you still find yourself struggling to find a vocation, think about finding a spiritual director. This is a Catholic priest that is faithful to the Church's Magisterium and Holy Father who would be willing to carve out a little time in his life to help and guide you.

If he's not faithful to the Church's Magisterium, forget him!

Pray for a persevering attitude.

At times, you can finish a novena for something and, from your view, nothing happens. Read Matthew Chapter 6 before you get depressed, especially verses 25 to 34.

If you have times when you struggle in prayer — and you will — ask Our Blessed Mother to help you. Her will is His Will — Remember what she tells all Christians:

Do whatever He tells you. John 2:5

I hope this helps,

Mike
