Hi, guys —

I am 55 years old and have been married for 33 years. I know watching pornography is wrong.

Due to my age I am not as easily aroused as when I was younger. This frustrates my wife. My wife is older as well, and is not the young, good-looking woman she was when we were married.

The burning question I have is:

  • Is it a sin to watch movies that arouse you so you can have a sexual relationship with your wife?
  • In my view any movie like that is really pornography, is it not?
  • Is this not a slippery slope?

Eric replied:

HI Nathan —

Yes, such movies are wrong, because you are bonding yourself to the actresses, not to your wife.

Jesus said even to lust after a woman is to commit adultery with her, so what you're doing in this situation is committing adultery against your wife right in her presence by using the porn actresses to arouse yourself. You're also watching, and thus supporting, something that exploits and objectivizes women.

I'm not sure how to advise you to proceed. Try contacting your parish priest for some advice.

Eric
