Lorraine Parra wrote:

Hi, guys —

I want to baptize my daughter (she's almost a year old) and I have heard that I can't because I have not received my First Holy Communion. Her father has and both her father and I are baptized Catholics.

  • What can I do in order to have my daughter baptized?

Lorraine

  { Since I have not received my First Holy Communion, how do I get my one-year-old baptized? }

Mike replied:

Dear Lorraine,

Thanks for the question.

Your daughter should have been baptized right after she was born.

I have never heard that a child can't be baptized because a parent hasn't received his or her
First Communion, but maybe there is something Fr. Jonathan is aware of that I am not.

You didn't say whether you and your daughter's father are married, or not, or whether both of you attend Mass on a weekly basis. I'm also assuming the daughter's father wants her baptized as well.

These would be important issues that the Church would take into mind because there has to be a good hope that the child will be raised Catholic in order for her to be baptized in the Church.

Make an appointment with your local Catholic pastor to talk about having her baptized right away.

As my colleague Eric said in a different reply:

Except in case of emergency, only a priest or deacon may lawfully baptize into the Catholic Church.

I hope this helps,

Mike

Fr. Jonathan replied:

Mike,

She is smart to check out what she heard as people often give wrong information when it comes to things like this.

The standard as to whether to baptize is whether there is well founded hope that the child will be raised as a Catholic.

You were correct to send her to her parish priest.

Fr. Jonathan
