Eric replied:

Hi, Lisa —

It requires that the candidate be properly catechized, which typically means that they'll have attended Catholic school or CCD (Sunday School) classes each year. If not, they'll have to go through a course of formation, perhaps:

  • the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC)
  • the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) or
  • something equivalent.

They'll probably want the candidate to be confirmed in the spring with the other candidates, or at a minimum, at Easter. Some of this depends on the pastor. The process itself involves an anointing with oil and a laying on of hands, usually by a bishop,

Eric,

Thank you so much for the clarification.

How it's being presented to us is, when my son visits his Father's family in Australia, he will undergo this, however it seems that it is more complex than just throwing a party.

Our son has never attended CCD or Sunday School and it appears he will need to be catechized to be confirmed in the Church.

Thank you for all your help.

Best,

Lisa
