Hi, guys —

  • I want to know what the Church's stance is on Limbo?
  • Is this still a doctrine of the Church or has it been abolished by the Church?
  • What is the scriptural basis for this belief?

Thank you very much!

  { What is the Catholic view of Limbo: Has it been abolished or is it still a doctrine of the Church? }

Bob replied:

Bern,

Limbo is not, nor ever was, an official Catholic doctrine though for centuries was widely accepted as true. It was a theoretical solution to the problem of unbaptized catechumens and innocents, those who died with no personal sin. They didn't deserve Hell but couldn't enter Heaven because they didn't meet one or more of Christ's criteria, e.g. Baptism.

We hold that God can save those who have not been formally baptized just as He can save anyone who seeks Him with as earnest heart and soul but has not received sufficient teaching or the sacraments to know the full Gospel. It is called Mercy.

God's salvific will extends to all (cf. 1 Timothy 2:3) and affects more than just believers. (cf. 1 Timothy 4:10).

Limbo is unnecessary and obsolete as a theological construct.

Peace,

Bob Kirby
