Kathy Weinberg wrote:

Hi, guys —

In a 27-day novena saying the Rosary, I thought nine days were petitions and nine days were in thanksgiving but I'm not sure what the other nine days were for.

  • Can you please help me find the answer?

  { In a 27-day novena saying the Rosary, what are the final nine days for? }

Mike replied:

Hi Kathy,

I empathize with your question. I found it hard to understand as well.

I believe you are referring to a devotional given by Our Lady of Fortua Agrelli, an approved apparition of the Church. Simply stated, with an approval by Cardinal Spellman:

How to say a 54-Day Novena

To obtain a favor, pray consecutively 6 nine-day rosary novenas
(27 days of petition and 27 days of thanksgiving) alternating mysteries.

Imprimatur: Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, September 30, 1954

So instead of thinking of it as:

9 + 9 + 9, which gives you, 27,

think of it as:

3 x 9 (27) days plus 3 x 9 (27) days. This gives you, 54.

The first 3 novenas [3 x 9 (27) days] are said for the petitions you have and the second set of 3 novenas [3 x 9 (27) days] is said in thanksgiving.

I used this site for guidance. It may help you too. It has two twenty-seven day calendars you can use as a guide.

I think part of the problem of understanding this devotion is it is not said in the usual way most Catholic Christians say the Rosary.

I hope this helps,

Mike
