Janet Hope wrote:

Hi, guys —

My father is dying. He will die at home. We had him anointed and plan on saying the Rosary with him each day.

  • I am wondering if there are any Catholic traditions that are recognized by the Church that we could do at the time of death or just after?

There are 10 grandchildren who are 14-years-old and under that are close to him. We would like to make this a spiritual experience for them and us.

Mike replied:

Hi Janet,

You already have a pretty good spiritual experience set in place for your father.

The only thing I would add is the Chapel of Divine Mercy. I said the chapel when both my parents passed away. It has some great promises that have been approved by the Church.

What is Divine Mercy? - How to Recite the Chaplet.

From Sister Faustina's Diary:

Jesus told her: "Write that when they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the merciful Savior." (Diary, 1541)

Earlier, our Lord said to her, ”At the hour of their death, I defend as My own glory every soul that will say this chaplet; or when others say it for a dying person, the indulgence is the same." (Diary, 811)

My colleagues may have other ideas.

Mike

John replied:

Hi, Janet —

I would only add that there are many wonderful Scriptures, especially in the Gospels, that you could share as family in your prayer time. Jesus spoke about:

  • The Kingdom of Heaven
  • His Father's house, and
  • There being many mansions

In addition, the Epistles of Saint Paul, in particular his Epistle to Philippians speak of Joy . . .
the Joy that comes from being in God's presence.

John
