Hi, guys —

Thank you for your time!

My son is going through some bad bouts of depression.

  • Can you please tell me the patron saint for depression and are there any specific prayers we can pray as a family?
  • What prayers can he pray to get through this?

He has stopped going to Mass lately and we are very worried about him.

God Bless and thank you!

Mary

Mike replied:

Hi Mary,

This is a common question; it's even in our searchable knowledge base. There are a lot of quick answers there, so give it a try.

I searched the knowledge base for you and found this web posting that may help:

  • Is he of age where he can support himself or is he still under your roof?
  • If he is still under your roof, you should ensure he renews his covenant every Sunday with you at Mass. There are many graces just by being in the presence of the Lord in the Church.
  • If he is not under your roof, you have to respect his free will, but encourage him to join you for Mass each Sunday. God is only asking one day out of seven from him and it is for his own good.

Beyond that, you should encourage him to have a daily prayer life.

We all have down periods in our life; I'm going through one right now. The key is to remember that something good will come out of this. We may not see it now but things will get better.

I heard someone say:

Life is not about struggles and failures we have . . . . they will come.
Life is about how we get through and recover from those struggles and (apparent) failures.

It can be very tough and emotionally hard but, if there are no medical issues involved, encourage him to persevere. If there are medical issues talk to your pastor about getting the appropriate counseling for him.

The patron saint of Depression is St. Dymphna. This information may help:

I hope this helps,

Mike
